Why I Started Spray Tanning

Apparently, the top dollar employees at the tanning salons sometimes do not clean the tanning beds properly

Before I got my first spray tan, I was a religious, daily tanning bed tanner (I’m pretty sure that is the official term).

I also would lay out at the pool and the beach enjoying the sunny San Diego weather, not only with no sunscreen but also lathered in tanning oils.

It is almost embarrassing to say that now, knowing all the damage the UV rays cause, but at the time I did not think of the consequences, I just knew I needed to be tan.

Until I started getting white spots all over my skin!

I went to the doctor and was told it was FUNGUS from laying in the tanning beds!

Apparently, the top dollar employees at the tanning salons sometimes do not clean the tanning beds properly, and when other people’s sweat absorbs into your skin it can cause skin fungus. SO GROSS!

So I went on an anti-fungal treatment to cure the spots, but that did not stop me from using the beds. I decided to switch to stand up tanning beds only.

This was a good solution for a while as well. Until I got pregnant and the heat from the tanning beds would make me feel like I was going to pass out.

I gave up tanning beds and switched over to sun bathing only.

Fast forward to having the baby and wanting to get back to looking good. I started back to my routine of gym and tanning (and laundry lol) but suddenly I started to get brown patches all over my face.

The browning area over my lip made me look like I had half a mustache!

I was humiliated and went to the dermatologist right away. He said that it is sun spots or “melasma” from sun bathing and bed tanning.

I had to purchase hundreds of dollars in bleaching and brightening creams to make the discoloration go away. Additionally, he advised that I wear SPF at all times and stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

HOW ON EARTH COULD I EVER BE TAN WITHOUT UV RAYS?

I called my sister so upset and she recommended I try a spray tan. With no other options, I decided to give it a try.

I was pleasantly surprised!

I walked in, picked a color, and in minutes was tanner than in 2 weeks of the beds. INSTANT GRATIFICATION! Why had I not been doing all along? I was hooked immediately.

There were a couple minor adjustments I had to make to get used to spray tanning on a weekly basis, but I determined it was worth it.

Since then, the color and texture of my skin have improved dramatically. I went from having ashy, leathery, discolored skin to now hydrated, smooth, and even skin.

This is not a direct result from spray tanning of course, but a direct result from taking proactive steps to protect my skin.

This is the main reason I started spray tanning. Be proactive and learn from my tragic skin experiences.
